Meet the Two First-Year Players Poised for Success
As the South Carolina Gamecocks prepare for their season-opening matchup against the Georgia State Panthers, all eyes will be on a pair of highly touted freshmen who have been named "Freshmen to Watch" by various publications.
1. Dionte Smith, Wide Receiver
- Consensus 4-star recruit out of Lakeland, Florida
- Ranked No. 32 wide receiver in the nation by ESPN
- Expectations to be a major contributor in the Gamecocks' passing attack
2. Toriano Pride, Safety
- 3-star recruit from Sumter, South Carolina
- Led his high school team to a state championship in 2022
- Expected to play a significant role in the Gamecocks' secondary
Head coach Shane Beamer has praised both players for their work ethic and talent during training camp.
"These two young men have shown a lot of promise in practice," Beamer said. "They're both very talented and eager to learn. I'm excited to see what they can do on the field this season."
Smith and Pride will have the opportunity to make an immediate impact for the Gamecocks, who are looking to bounce back from a disappointing 7-6 campaign in 2022. The season opener against Georgia State is set for September 2nd at Williams-Brice Stadium.
